Feral Cat Day 2012

Thanks to Alley Cat Allies, today is National Feral Cat Day!

I celebrated Feral Cat Day yesterday by helping a lovely retired couple, Ken and Doris, in the trapping of their feral colony so they could be spayed an neutered. They live near a large green belt and have seen hundreds of feral cats over the years. Ken told me the average lifespan of these cats is around one year. A few years ago, they saved a black and white tuxedo that had gotten attacked by an eagle. They got him vet care and brought him inside, where he now enjoys the spoils of an inside kitty life.

Ken and Doris noticed lately the cats appeared hungrier and skinnier than usual. They suspected their food source may be dwindling. Seeing these cats suffering pulled at their hearts and they had to do something. They got in touch with the Community Cat Coalition and a volunteer member educated them on the TNR process and brought some traps for them to use to trap the cats. They were thinking there was seven cats total.

Traps being prepped for trapping.

Yesterday, along with another CCC volunteer, I popped in for a few minutes to help setup some traps and chat about winter shelters. Ken showed me some of the winter shelters he had built for the cats. They are converted coolers, that are also lined with rigid insulation and have stray bedding. He popped the lids off to show us and there was evidence of three little nesting spots –   they were already being used! How delightful! He’s planning to build more – lucky cats, having such kind people looking out for them. We discussed options for shelters and feeders.

The shelters are to the right of the steps.

I learned by the end of the day he had trapped 8 cats! Two mothers, their kittens and papa. Today they were going into the clinic for their spay/neuter!

This makes me very happy. Some compassionate people in the community who are willing to step up and take care of their local community cats. Thank you Ken and Doris, you guys are awesome! What a great way to celebrate National Feral Cat day!

Well done to them, Phil, and to you too! I’m thrilled they got 8 (!) and that these families won’t be continuing the cycle. Yay!

  4. That is a great way to celebrate. And I suspect there are more people out there – willing to help and do the right thing if they can get a little help and education. GREAT JOB!!!

  5. How wonderful that they are helping. Poor kitties, not much food and then it gets cold. Thank God there are people like you and this wonderful couple that will help!
